Empowering students in Latin America
Disadvantaged students in Latin America are at high risk of failing in college. In a region where only 46% of all college students eventually graduate, underprivileged students must also overcome educational gaps and economic hardship. They generally come from places outside large metropolitan areas with lower income and academic standards. In the meantime, most universities are located in large urban areas with a high cost of living where students must cover their living expenses. These realities result in structural inequalities for those populations outside of large cities.
We identify students facing economic hardship with their living expenses and at risk of dropping out. Our students receive financial assistance and integral support as part of our mission. We want them to be financially secure and build skills outside of their academic curriculum so they can succeed in the labor market.
We are changing lives by supporting disadvantaged students. Latin America has historically suffered from low social mobility, which impacts its economic growth. Low-income families may need ten or more generations in some countries to reach the mean income. We believe in the power of education to promote social mobility. Through the support of disadvantaged university students, we positively impact the individual, their families, their local communities, and an entire country.
We currently work with a few of the largest public universities in Colombia to support students at risk of dropping out due to economic hardship. Students receive financial support for living expenses, professional development, and counseling. We provide them with courses to improve their English proficiency and workshops to develop soft skills critical for their career success. In exchange, we require students to maintain good academic standing, actively participate with the foundation, and complete a social project to give back to their communities.
Impact-U is a non-profit organization registered in the United States and Colombia. We bring together a group of passionate and diverse volunteers from many locations. We change lives through the transformative power of education and the conviction that small actions can initiate massive transformations.
